GV10Witness Closes After Successful Election Monitoring Effort
Following the successful completion of the second round of the presidential elections in Guinea, Alliance Guinea announces the close-out of the GV10Witness election monitoring system. GV10Witness received messages from citizens all over Guinea reporting events from the first round through the run-off election and incidents of post-election violence. Thanks to GV10Witness, monitors and human rights groups around the world were able to track and observe events as they happened in a transparent manner.
Alliance Guinea, an international nonpartisan group dedicated to the promotion of democracy and justice in Guinea, operated the GV10Witness system with support from the US Embassy, the CNOSCG and in collaboration with the CENI and individual donations and hundreds of volunteers across the world. Thanks to the contributions of hundreds of citizens in Guinea and hundreds of international volunteers, the GV10Witness system received over 23,000 SMS messages and volunteers mapped 2,000 confirmed reports on election and post-election related events.
As Guinea looks forward to the legislative elections in 2011 and the continuation of the democratic transition, Alliance Guinea welcomes suggestions on how to use and apply this system to future democratic elections. Suggestions, ideas and opportunities for collaboration can be shared with allianceguinea@gmail.com
Alliance Guinea wishes to express its deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the system in Guinea and all the volunteers who worked long-hours during the elections sorting and verifying reports in the GV10Witness system.
A full report on the system will be available later in January 2011.
